Joburg Gears Up for Change as Presidential Working Group Awaits Final Appointments
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The City of Johannesburg finds itself at a pivotal juncture as it eagerly anticipates the final appointments to the Presidential Working Group, a strategic initiative aimed at revitalizing the city’s infrastructure and public service framework. Announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this year, this group is poised to bring together governance experts and seasoned political figures to address the significant challenges facing South Africa’s economic hub.
In a recent media briefing, Joburg Mayor Dada Morero shared insights regarding the forthcoming Working Group. While the city is still waiting on President Ramaphosa to finalize the list of individuals who will join the group, Morero expressed optimism about the initiatives already underway within Joburg.
The city has proactively established its own structure that will align with the future Presidential Working Group, ensuring that local leaders are ready to tackle pressing issues. “Our acting city manager, Tshepo Makola, has confirmed that the city’s working group will kick off operations this week, bringing together key leaders from the most important sectors of the city,” Morero stated, highlighting the cooperative spirit of the initiative.
Makola underscored the importance of collaboration, noting that Joburg’s structure will only operate at full capacity once the Presidential Working Group is in place. “We’ve allocated the executives as per the eight working groups. We’ve identified senior executives for all those groups, and the work will commence on Friday,” he said.
The Presidential Working Group has a critical timeline, as its objectives must be met well ahead of the G20 summit scheduled for later this year. By fostering efficiency and enhancing service delivery, Joburg’s transformation could serve as a model for other cities in Africa facing similar challenges.
As Johannesburg prepares for this momentous change, it stands as a beacon of hope for urban renewal in South Africa. With the collective efforts of the city and the Presidential Working Group, the potential for a rejuvenated, efficient, and thriving Johannesburg is on the horizon—a promising outlook for residents and visitors alike.
