Empowering Communities Through Health: M-PESA Foundation's Free Medical Camp in Makueni County

In an uplifting move for community health, the M-PESA Foundation recently collaborated with Zuri Health and the Lion Sight First Eye Hospital to host a free medical camp at Unoa Grounds in Wote Town, Makueni County. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to enhance healthcare access across Kenya, ensuring that even the most remote communities receive vital medical attention.

The medical camp offered a wide range of health services to attendees, highlighting crucial women’s health consultations. Services included breast cancer screenings, prenatal clinics, and antenatal checkups, all vital for early detection and preventative care. Alongside these, attendees benefited from eye care consultations, dental screenings, and general health check-ups, making this event a comprehensive healthcare resource for local residents. The Foundation also generously distributed 100 Mama Packs to new mothers and expectant women at the Makueni County Referral Hospital, promoting better maternal health and well-being.

Nicholas Ng’ang’a, Chairman of the M-PESA Foundation, emphasized the importance of integrating technology into these medical camps. “Health is one of our key pillars, and through these medical camps, we have taken critical services closer to people across the country. By integrating technology, we can follow up on their progress after treatment,” he noted. This commitment to innovation and ongoing care is a testament to the Foundation’s goal of improving health interventions in partnership with local county governments.

This camp at Makueni County marks the 25th in the second phase of the programme, which has served over 53,000 individuals across 18 counties, including key regions like Nairobi, Machakos, and Siaya. The medical camps also feature follow-up consultations via SMS and WhatsApp, providing patients with continuous support for up to six months post-visit.

In Makueni, the impact of Safaricom’s initiatives is profound. The Safaricom Foundation has also funded a Ksh. 27 million maternity complex at Tawa Sub-County Hospital and organized a free fistula camp at Makueni County Referral Hospital, where over 200 women received essential surgeries and treatment.

The Foundation’s Ndoto Zetu initiative has further equipped healthcare facilities like the Itumbule Health Centre and Kilungu Sub-County Hospital, ensuring that essential medical services are readily available to the community.

These efforts represent a significant step towards improving healthcare for marginalized populations in Kenya, and they showcase the power of community-driven initiatives. For more updates on health initiatives across Africa, stay connected!
