New Leadership in Dakar: Archbishop André Gueye Takes the Helm

Dakar, Senegal — In a significant shift for the Catholic community in Senegal, Bishop André Gueye has been appointed the new metropolitan archbishop of Dakar, following the resignation of Archbishop Benjamin Ndiaye. This announcement, made on February 22, 2025, represents not just a change in leadership but also an opportunity for growth and renewal within the archdiocese.

Archbishop-elect André Gueye, born on January 6, 1967, in Pallo-Younga, brings a wealth of experience and commitment to his new role. His educational journey includes studies in philosophy at the major seminary in Sebikhotane, Dakar, and further theological insights gained at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome. His ordination as a priest on June 27, 1992, took place at the Cathedral of Thiès, marking the beginning of a dedicated vocation to serve his community.

Gueye’s pastoral career has been both diverse and impactful. He served as a parish vicar in Bambey and Thiès, holding positions that allowed him to engage deeply with parishioners. Notably, he was also a teacher of philosophy at the Saint Jean Marie Vianney Major Seminary in Brin, demonstrating his commitment to educating future leaders in the church. His election as bishop of Thiès on January 18, 2013, followed by his consecration on May 25 of the same year, paved the way for his subsequent role as apostolic administrator of Saint-Louis du Sénégal since January 12 of this year.

The appointment of Archbishop Gueye is particularly significant as Senegal continues to thrive as a beacon of cultural and religious diversity in West Africa. The Catholic Church in Senegal plays an essential role in promoting dialogue and fostering unity among different faith communities. With Gueye at the helm, there is optimism for renewed engagement and outreach efforts, particularly among the youth and marginalized groups.

In his new position, Gueye will face the opportunity to tackle various social issues affecting the nation, while also reinforcing the church’s commitment to education, social justice, and community development. His leadership is anticipated to steer the archdiocese toward a future that honors tradition while embracing the dynamic changes in society.

As Senegal’s capital embarks on this new chapter, the community is eager to support Archbishop Gueye in his mission. His journey represents hope and renewal, not just for the Catholic congregation, but for all those who value the spirit of unity and peace in Senegal.
