The recent meeting of The Gambia’s Public Enterprise Committee (PEC) sparked significant discussions as they resolved to summon the Vice President’s Office and the Finance Ministry for clarity on a sizable investment made in public transport. The issue at hand involves the expenditure of Euro 9.8 million—equating to around 686 million Dalasi—on the procurement of 70 buses for the Gambia Transport Service Company (GTSC).
On February 3, 2025, PEC members convened with representatives from the Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation (SSHFC) and GTSC to scrutinize the financial dealings surrounding these buses. The SSHFC and GTSC reported that they are still waiting for the government to reimburse this substantial investment, which was initially prompted by a directive from the government itself. They explained that they not only fulfilled the original order of 50 buses but added an additional 20, under the assurance that reimbursement would follow.
Hon. Lamin J. Sanneh, the Chairperson of PEC and member of the National Assembly for Brikama South, noted the pressing nature of the matter, which has become evident through recent audit reports. “The committee’s decision stems from the critical nature of these findings, underscoring the need for accountability and clarity on the government’s financial commitments,” he stated in a post-meeting interview.
In light of the complexity of the situation—including changes in payment processes directed by the government—the committee has decided to adjourn until February 17, 2025, to allow for further investigation. The goal is to bring together representatives from the Vice President’s Office, the Finance Ministry, and the State-Owned Enterprise Commission to discuss how to address the outstanding payment and ensure the financial agreements are honored.
This proactive approach aims not only to clarify the financial responsibilities associated with the bus purchases but also to strengthen the integrity of public transport financing in The Gambia. The engagement reflects a commitment to transparency and efficiency in public enterprise operations, a crucial aspect for fostering trust in governmental processes.
As discussions unfold, many Gambians remain hopeful that despite this financial challenge, the commitment to improving public transport will persist, reflecting a brighter future for national infrastructure development. It’s an opportunity for both government and citizens to unite in pursuing effective solutions.
