The automotive market is buzzing with excitement as Volkswagen takes a significant step forward by enhancing the T-Cross range, making it more accessible than ever for potential buyers. Recently unveiled at the company’s “2025 Indaba” in Kariega, South Africa, the announcement of two new entry-level models has set the stage for a fresh wave of interest in this beloved compact SUV.
The new base models, the 1.0 TSI 70kW and the 85kW DSG auto version, are priced at R400,700 and R418,200 respectively. While these prices may not place them at the very bottom of the SUV market, they do represent a considerable reduction compared to their predecessors, making them an attractive option for many. Previously, models such as the 1.0 TSI Life, Style, and R-Line came in significantly higher, ranging from R471,400 to R543,800.
Although detailed specifications are still on the horizon, initial features promise a solid value proposition. The new T-Cross models come equipped with essentials like App-Connect, an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a multifunctional steering wheel, and manual air conditioning. Safety and convenience are also prioritized with hill assist, two USB ports at the front, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Externally, the models sport 16-inch covered steel wheels, adding a touch of robustness to their aesthetic.
One of the most exciting aspects is the performance. The 70kW 1.0-litre TSI is paired exclusively with a five-speed manual gearbox, allowing it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in a brisk 11.5 seconds. Meanwhile, the 85kW model, featuring a seven-speed DSG auto transmission, does even better with a time of just 10.2 seconds. Both models boast impressive combined fuel consumption figures of 5.9 and 5.6 litres per 100 km, making them economical choices in a fluctuating fuel market.
Completing the facelifted T-Cross line-up introduced in late 2024, these new models benefit from a refreshed design that includes a sleek new bumper and grille, alongside exciting new color options like Grape Yellow and Clear Blue Metallic. The interior also received a makeover with a modern dashboard featuring a free-standing 8.0-inch touchscreen that enhances the driving experience with its user-friendly interface and fresh materials throughout the cabin.
The introduction of these entry-level T-Cross models marks a pivotal moment for Volkswagen South Africa, as they strive to make stylish and efficient vehicles accessible to a wider audience. With a three-year or 45,000km service plan included at no extra cost, there’s never been a better time to consider the T-Cross for those eyeing a spirited adventure on South Africa’s roads.
