Brussels Zoo: A Champion for Wildlife Conservation and Biodiversity!

As we wave goodbye to the meteorological winter on February 28, there’s exciting news emerging from ZOO Planckendael, located just outside Brussels. This vibrant wildlife park is welcoming its feathered residents back in style, with storks returning earlier than usual this year. In a delightful display, the first flocks made their appearance as early as January, marking the park’s successful stork season with over 150 of these majestic birds already settled in. That’s three-quarters of the entire stork population that calls Planckendael home!

Storks are known for their strong attachment to their nests, and it’s fascinating to witness their dedication. When a stork returns to find its nest occupied, a spirited showdown ensues. The rightful owner of the nest will defend its territory, often resulting in a remodeling of the nest with new twigs and branches, ensuring the structure is not only secure but stylish for the upcoming breeding season.

But the park is not just about storks! ZOO Planckendael is also taking important strides to protect the nearly endangered dune gazelles. With only around 500 dune gazelles remaining in their natural habitat, conservation efforts are crucial. The park is actively participating in a breeding program in Tunisia, providing knowledge, resources, and even their own dune gazelles to support what has become the largest genetically diverse population of these animals worldwide. This collaboration began as early as 1999 but has since evolved into a vital conservation strategy for these remarkable gazelles.

Moreover, there’s more to be excited about as ZOO Planckendael unveils its brand-new entrance, featuring a stunning 28-meter-tall bamboo tower. This architectural marvel stands as a striking symbol of the park’s commitment to eco-friendly design and will undoubtedly entice visitors as they explore the enchanting landscapes of the park.

As spring breaks in March, ZOO Planckendael has exciting news for visitors: the park will operate an hour longer, staying open until 5 PM, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature for an extra hour.

Be sure to plan your visit to ZOO Planckendael and experience the magic of wildlife returning to life this spring!
