Kampala Celebrates New Leadership as Hajat Sharifah Buzeki and Benon Moses Kigenyi Step In
On January 8, 2025, Kampala welcomed a breath of fresh air as Hajat Sharifah Buzeki was officially sworn in as the Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). Joining her is Benon Moses Kigenyi, who will serve as the Deputy Executive Director. This pivotal event took place at the Mayor’s Parlor, marked by a gathering of political dignitaries and community leaders, signaling an exciting new chapter for the city.
The serene but purposeful atmosphere of the swearing-in ceremony was overseen by Lucy Nakyobe, Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet. Both Buzeki and Kigenyi took their oaths of office within minutes of each other, solidifying their commitment to serve the citizens of Kampala with honor. In her inaugural address, Buzeki expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity, particularly thanking President Museveni. “I am honored to lead KCCA and pledge to do so with dedication, humility, and diligence,” she affirmed, setting a tone of collaboration and forward-thinking.
Buzeki wasted no time diving into her vision for Kampala. She highlighted the need for a robust approach to waste management, urban planning, and public transport. “Kampala has tremendous potential,” she said, outlining her strategies to tackle waste disposal issues while introducing innovative waste management techniques. Plans also include a push towards digitalizing public services and enhancing security, all while ensuring inclusivity in urban development.
The newly sworn-in executive addressed the important topic of corruption by stressing a commitment to transparency. “We must make corruption a high-risk venture for our employees and everyone else,” Buzeki passionately stated. Her vision centers on transforming Kampala into a clean, green, and economically vibrant city, exploring new avenues for revenue generation along the way.
In her closing remarks, Buzeki called upon all stakeholders, including KCCA staff, to unite in the shared goal of making Kampala an inviting and prosperous city. Her enthusiasm resonated throughout the room, invigorating attendees with a message of hope and collaboration.
Minsa Kabanda, the Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, was quick to congratulate the new leaders, emphasizing the importance of addressing infrastructural challenges, including poor roads and drainage systems. Meanwhile, Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago extended a warm welcome to Buzeki and Kigenyi, expressing his eagerness to work together on pressing municipal challenges.
Reflecting on his time as acting Executive Director, Frank Rusa acknowledged his achievements over the past 111 days. He emphasized the importance of unity and collaborative work within KCCA, highlighting that successful governance requires a symbiotic relationship between technical and political factions.
With Lucy Nakyobe and Yunus Kakande offering insight into the complexities of managing a city like Kampala, the call for teamwork echoed loudly among the assembled leaders. Kakande reminded everyone that effective management requires strong collaboration with KCCA Council members, the Lord Mayor, and various stakeholders.
As Buzeki and Kigenyi embark on their leadership journey, Kampala stands on the brink of sustainable urban development and enhanced service delivery. With a clear vision and emphatic leadership, the future of this East African city looks bright.
