Philips Partners with Imbuto Foundation to Transform Healthcare in Rwanda with Advanced Ultrasound Technology
In an exciting development for Rwanda’s healthcare landscape, Philips has delivered a remarkable 390 Lumify handheld ultrasound devices to the Imbuto Foundation, thanks to a collaborative effort with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This initiative marks a significant step in enhancing medical imaging accessibility across the nation, especially in remote areas, and plays a crucial role in Rwanda’s ongoing healthcare transformation goals.
The Philips Lumify system is a game-changer in medical diagnostics. By combining portable transducers with a smartphone or tablet app, it enables immediate access to high-quality ultrasound imaging. This innovative technology is particularly beneficial in emergency situations, critical care, and prenatal health, empowering healthcare workers to make timely and informed decisions. The tele-ultrasound feature takes it a step further, facilitating real-time collaboration between frontline workers and specialists. They can share live imaging, voice, and camera feeds, breaking down barriers in healthcare delivery.
To ensure that the benefits of this technology reach the most underserved populations, Philips has initiated a comprehensive “Train the Trainer” program. This initiative is set to empower 20 ultrasound technologists at the Rwanda Biomedical Centre who will, in turn, train midwives, nurses, and clinical officers in rural clinics. The focus is on integrating essential ultrasound skills into everyday care practices, enabling professional healthcare providers to identify complications early and improve patient outcomes.
“Bringing health technology to underserved areas is pivotal to enhancing healthcare outcomes,” said Joe Harb, Senior Program Officer at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. “These tools empower professionals to deliver high-quality care and cultivate resilient healthcare systems.”
The Imbuto Foundation’s Vugayabagabo Jackson underscored the importance of this initiative, stating, “This partnership comes at a crucial time and reinforces our commitment to equipping healthcare workers with the necessary skills for improving patient outcomes across Rwanda.”
Eddy Rizk, the Philips Ultrasound Business Leader for the META region, emphasized how this project aligns with Rwanda’s incredible strides in healthcare over the past two decades. “Portable devices and targeted training will significantly enhance the quality of life by effectively addressing gaps in care,” he noted.
As the partners continue to work alongside Rwanda’s Ministry of Health, the vision is clear: to optimize device usage and ensure every Rwandan has access to high-quality healthcare, paving the way for a healthier future.
This initiative not only highlights the innovative spirit towards improving healthcare in Africa but also showcases the importance of partnerships in driving healthcare transformation. Stay tuned for more updates on how this collaboration unfolds!
