In a vibrant celebration of academic achievement, the University of Buea (UB) proudly conferred degrees to over 5,000 students during its 26th convocation ceremony, held over three enriching days from January 9 to 11, 2025. This landmark event took place in the beautiful coastal town of Buea, which is renowned for its stunning views and rich cultural heritage.
With the Vice Chancellor of UB, Ngomo Harace Manga, at the helm, the ceremony emphasized the university’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community outreach. Representing the Minister of Higher Education, Jacques Fame Ndongo, Manga noted that the convocation was a significant marker of a successful academic year and a moment of pride for the graduates and their families alike. “It’s not just an event; it’s a milestone in the lives of our graduates,” he shared, highlighting the joy that scholarships and educational achievements can bring to families across the region.
A Change in Doctorate Graduates
While this year’s graduation boasts an impressive number of bachelor’s and master’s degrees, the Vice Chancellor did express a potential concern regarding the future of PhD graduates. Due to a current government suspension on doctorate programs within state universities, there may be a decline in PhD graduates moving forward. However, he reassured attendees that the university remains hopeful for a return to normalcy once the government lifts this suspension, allowing UB to resume accepting new PhD candidates.
Honoring a Visionary
A standout moment in the convocation was the recognition of Kate Kanyi Tometi, renowned as Cameroon’s wealthiest woman, who was awarded an honorary doctorate in business management. Celebrated for her significant contributions to education in the region, including a generous annual scholarship of FCFA 50 million to UB, Tometi’s impact extends far beyond financial assistance. The scholarship specifically targets outstanding and underprivileged students, ensuring that education remains accessible to all.
At the heart of the graduation festivities was a message of hope and empowerment through education. As the Vice Chancellor aptly put it, “Her generosity is geared toward the training of youths,” emphasizing the vital role that education plays in shaping future leaders. This year’s convocation marked a historic first for the University of Buea, with the January graduation signaling a new chapter for the institution in its quest to inspire and uplift the student community.
As the graduates move forward to make their mark on the world, the university’s commitment to fostering excellence in education resonates strongly, paving the way for a brighter future for all involved.
