Bank Windhoek Welcomes James Chapman as Managing Director Designate
In an exciting development for the banking sector in Namibia, Bank Windhoek has officially appointed James Chapman as its new Managing Director Designate, effective from February 1, 2025. This decision comes as a significant transition for the bank, which has been under the leadership of Baronice Hans, its first female and longest-serving Managing Director, since July 2016. Hans is set to conclude her remarkable tenure at the end of June 2025, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and innovation.
Chapman, a Chartered Accountant, is not new to Bank Windhoek or its parent company, Capricorn Group. He boasts a Bachelor of Accounting and a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting from the esteemed University of Stellenbosch. With over a decade of experience at Bank Windhoek, he has held various executive positions, including Chief Financial Officer and, most recently, Executive Officer for Retail Banking Services and Specialist Finance. His extensive background in the financial sector, paired with his strategic vision, makes him an exciting addition to the leadership team at Bank Windhoek.
The outgoing Managing Director, Baronice Hans, has been instrumental in guiding the bank through various economic challenges with her unwavering commitment and proactive strategies. The board’s appreciation for Chapman was evident during the announcement, with Bank Windhoek Chairperson Johan Swanepoel praising his business acumen and track record of success. “We are confident he will lead Bank Windhoek successfully into the future,” he stated.
Chapman expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “I am extremely honoured by the trust the Board has placed in me to lead Bank Windhoek, a truly Namibian bank with a rich history and legacy of service excellence. I look forward to collaborating with our talented team and embracing innovation to drive sustainable growth and deliver value to our clients, stakeholders, and the broader Namibian economy.”
As part of a seamless transition process, Chapman will work closely with Hans from February 2025 until he officially takes over as Managing Director on July 1, 2025. This collaborative approach ensures that the bank continues to build on its foundations of excellence while adapting to the ever-evolving financial landscape.
As Namibia looks to the future, the leadership change at Bank Windhoek represents a pivotal moment for not only the bank but also the wider Namibian economy. With a focus on innovation and consistent service, James Chapman’s appointment is a step toward fostering growth and stability in the nation’s financial institutions.
