Overcoming the Challenges of Education Amidst COVID-19: Sigauque Mmathapelo's Journey
In the heart of Soweto, 17-year-old Sigauque Mmathapelo has recently wrapped up a gripping academic year at Forte High School. Reflecting on her experience, Sigauque describes a year that was both invigorating and daunting, as the demands of her curriculum became intensely apparent. With exams approaching rapidly, she found herself grappling with the pressure of mastering substantial material in a remarkably short time.
“This academic year has certainly tested my limits,” stated Sigauque. “I felt like I spent more hours at school than at home, and the pace was overwhelming. However, revisiting the same subjects each term did offer a glimmer of hope. It allowed me to gradually improve and identify areas for growth. Each exam revealed a new challenge, pushing me to adapt and grow.”
What truly made her journey memorable was the unwavering support she received from her teachers and friends. “My teachers have been incredible mentors throughout this rollercoaster of a year. They were more than just educators; they became parental figures who celebrated my wins, no matter how small, and stood by me during tough times. Additionally, my friends shared in this struggle, and together we maintained our focus on achieving great results.”
Sigauque’s journey to success was not without its hurdles, particularly due to the impact of COVID-19. She recalls being in grade 8 when the pandemic resulted in a nationwide lockdown after only three months of in-person learning. “The transition was tough. The extended absence from school led me into a rut. I struggled to reignite my passion for learning once we returned. Initially, I thought that relying on common knowledge would suffice during exams, but that approach failed me in grade 11, prompting me to seek new study habits.”
Her experience serves as a valuable lesson for future students. “For those heading into matric, discipline is non-negotiable—it will be vital to your success,” she emphasizes. “Friendship also plays a crucial role, so surround yourself with peers who uplift and inspire you academically and emotionally.”
Looking towards the future, Sigauque has set her sights on studying Mining Engineering at the prestigious University of Pretoria. This ambitious goal reflects her determination to forge a path in a field where she can thrive.
Sigauque’s journey is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of supportive relationships during challenging times. Her story encourages not just students, but anyone facing challenges, to embrace their journey with tenacity and positivity.
