Excitement Builds as Schools Reopen in Lagos, Delta, and Beyond: Teachers and Students Ready for a Fresh Start!

Excitement is in the air as primary and secondary schools across several states in Nigeria prepare to welcome students back for the second term after the festive season. Parents, teachers, and pupils are gearing up for a fresh start, ready to pick up from where they left off and dive into another thrilling semester of learning.

States including Lagos, Ogun, Kano, Delta, and Jigawa are set for resumption on Monday, January 6, 2025. In Kano, the state government has specified that boarding students will return the day prior, on January 5, aligning with a broader initiative to ensure that educational institutions are primed for success.

According to a statement from Balarabe Kiru, the Director of Public Enlightenment in Kano, all parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure that their children return promptly to cultivate a smooth operational environment. He also mentioned that any pupils who do not adhere to the resumption schedule could face disciplinary actions, emphasizing the importance of punctuality.

The state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Makoda, reinforced the government’s dedication to enhancing the quality of education and creating a nurturing environment for students to thrive academically. Regular monitoring exercises will be initiated to guarantee that educators are present and fully engaged, contributing positively to the students’ educational experiences.

In Delta State, the message is similar. The government has emphasized the necessity for schools to recommit to the high standards of education, with the Permanent Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education, Mr. Augustine Oghoro, urging teachers to step up their efforts. The Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, is leading monitoring teams to ensure compliance, thereby promoting accountability among school staff.

Jigawa State also confirmed its schools would resume on January 6, with boarding students returning the previous day. Professor Isa Chamo, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Science, and Technology, reassured parents that the necessary teaching materials had been supplied, paving the way for an effective and engaging learning atmosphere.

On a national level, the Federal Government has revised the resumption date for unity schools to January 12, citing ongoing renovations as the reason for this delay. The circular from the Federal Ministry of Education underscores the commitment to improving facilities so that students can learn in optimal conditions.

As schools prepare to open, Alli-Oluwafuyi Lateefat, Head of School at Offsprings Ilorin in Kwara State, shared the importance of collaboration among schools, families, and students. “We are thrilled to welcome our students back after the holiday. With enthusiasm and dedication, we can make learning as enjoyable as play,” she stated, reminding parents of the need to be involved in their children’s education for better academic outcomes.

However, parents have voiced concerns about rising costs associated with the back-to-school season. For many, balancing the financial burdens of tuition, transportation, and other school-related expenses poses a significant challenge. Mr. Tunbosun Esho and Mrs. Nafisat Bakare expressed their struggles with increased costs, highlighting a growing trend that leaves many families in a tough spot.

As the 2024/2025 academic term kicks off, state governments are urging everyone involved—parents, teachers, and students—to embrace this fresh start with intentionality and preparedness. Together, they can ensure a seamless transition back into the academic year, fostering an atmosphere that prioritizes learning and overall development.

In the end, this enthusiastic return to academics is not just about hitting the books; it’s about building a foundation for future success in Nigeria’s vibrant education landscape. Let’s make it a collaborative journey! #Nigeria #Education #WorldNews #Lifestyle
