Ethekwini Braces for a 36-Hour Power Cut—What You Need to Know!

In an effort to enhance the reliability of electricity supply in eThekwini, Eskom has announced a comprehensive plan for scheduled maintenance at the Mpumalanga Substation. This essential work is set to take place over three weekends in January and February 2024, resulting in a temporary power outage that will impact local residents. With outages planned from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM, it’s crucial for those in the Mpumalanga region to prepare accordingly.

Eskom’s Planned Maintenance in eThekwini

The maintenance initiative will kick off on Saturday, January 25, continuing through the following dates:

  • January 25-27,
  • February 1-3, and
  • February 15-17.

This much-anticipated maintenance is necessary to refurbish vital electrical infrastructure at the Georgedale Substation, which serves as the primary support for the Mpumalanga Substation. According to Eskom, achieving a higher quality and reliability of electricity is the foremost goal of these efforts. “To execute this work safely, it is imperative to interrupt the electricity supply at the Mpumalanga Substation,” they stated. The overarching aim is to ultimately enhance the quality of electricity distributed throughout the area.

Although temporary, these outages present a valuable opportunity for local residents and businesses to assess their energy needs and consider alternative arrangements during the maintenance periods. Whether it’s stocking up on non-perishable food, charging devices ahead of time, or simply planning activities that do not rely on electricity, being proactive can make this process smoother. Additionally, community members are encouraged to stay informed about the process through official channels and engage with Eskom to voice any concerns or questions.
