Fiumicino Gets a Boost with New Cycle Path: ‘Pedalaria’
In an exciting new development for sustainable travel, Aeroporti di Roma has officially launched “Pedalaria,” a dedicated cycle path connecting Leonardo da Vinci Airport to the vibrant town of Fiumicino. Funded entirely by ADR with an impressive investment of €1.8 million, this initiative aligns with the DPCM Jubilee 2025 strategies aimed at enhancing infrastructure while promoting eco-friendly alternatives.
Spanning 3.5 kilometers, the pathway not only enhances connectivity but also integrates seamlessly with the existing cycling routes on Viale del Lago di Traiano. This project is the result of a successful partnership between ADR and the Municipality of Fiumicino, spearheaded by Mayor Mario Baccini. As travelers and locals traverse Pedalaria, they are treated to stunning views of the natural landscape and historical sites, including the remarkable Ports of Claudius and Trajan.
The benefits of this cycle-pedestrian path extend beyond its scenic charm. As part of ADR’s commitment to sustainability, the project incorporates permeable materials such as “Idrodrain” and recyclable wood mixtures that drastically reduce environmental impact. Innovative features such as drainage channels and Rain Gardens effectively manage water, while native Mediterranean plants sourced from five continents add to the path’s natural allure, promoting biodiversity along its route to Terminal 3.
Not just a win for eco-conscious travelers, this development is also a significant step in ADR’s broader sustainability agenda, with plans for €9 billion in private investments aimed at fostering both local community growth and environmental protection.
The ceremonial opening of “Pedalaria”, which took place near the Santa Maria degli Angeli Parish roundabout, was attended by a distinguished guest list, including Roberto Gualtieri, the Extraordinary Commissioner for Rome’s Jubilee 2025, and Marco Troncone, ADR CEO. Troncone emphasized the path’s role in enhancing functional mobility: “With the realization of ‘Pedalaria,’ we strengthen our commitment to fostering sustainable, accessible, and functional mobility for passengers and citizens alike,” he said.
Mayor Baccini added, “The project illustrates how collaboration between local enterprises and institutions can lead to high-quality infrastructure that promotes the common good. It signifies not just a pathway but a leap towards sustainable mobility.”
Gualtieri praised the endeavor as a “beautiful” and “extraordinary work,” connecting the airport to the town through scenic routes rich with historical significance. He noted the importance of facilitating bicycle transport from an environmental perspective, particularly for the 50,000 workers commuting daily to the bustling airport area.
As Fiumicino embraces this forward-thinking transportation solution, it paves the way for a greener future—one where sustainability and modern development go hand-in-hand.
