In a fantastic development for Zambia’s educational landscape, Minister of Education Douglas Syakalima has announced an encouraging rise in pass rates for both Grade 7 and Grade 9 examinations for 2024. This year’s results show an increase of 2.3% compared to the previous year, highlighting the government’s continuous commitment to improving academic standards.
Speaking at a recent press briefing, Syakalima revealed that out of a whopping 302,870 candidates who participated in the Grade 9 examinations, a commendable 169,280 students successfully earned their Junior Secondary School Leaving Certificate. The statistics get even better, as a total of 350,116 candidates received the Primary School Leaving Certificate. Breaking it down even further, there were 234,097 boys and 257,688 girls who participated in this pivotal stage of education, demonstrating a robust engagement from both genders in the learning process.
Moreover, the Ministry of Education has noted an improvement in the progression rate from primary to secondary school, which has now risen to 71.19% in 2024, up from 69% last year. Looking ahead, the Ministry plans to adopt the 2023 Zambia Curriculum using a phased approach that will roll out in 2025. Syakalima announced that the new academic year for these grades will commence on February 10, 2025. This timeline allows the ministry to ensure adequate preparation, including the printing and distribution of teaching materials and teacher training.
