Egypt’s Healthcare Revolution: A New Era of Medical Services

December 30, 2024 – CAIRO: In a remarkable transformation, Egypt’s healthcare landscape is undergoing a significant makeover, aimed at delivering high-quality, accessible medical services to its 110 million citizens. With a focus on holistic family care and comprehensive health insurance coverage, the Ministry of Health and Population is ambitiously targeting 100% health insurance by 2030. This is a substantial leap from the current 78% coverage, made possible through annual investments of around LE10 billion.

The rise in health insurance beneficiaries reflects this progress, skyrocketing from 54 million in 2014 to an impressive 69 million in 2024. Particularly notable is the “Takaful and Karama” program, which aids 8.5 million individuals through an extensive network comprising 23 branches of the General Authority for Health Insurance, 36 hospitals, over 367 clinics, and a staggering 1,673 contracted hospitals.

The infrastructure overhaul includes both major renovations and new constructions, with notable projects such as a 350-bed hospital in the New Administrative Capital and a 400-bed facility in Nasr City. These facilities are a part of a larger infrastructure initiative that spans across 11 governorates, featuring 20 healthcare projects designed to add 2,648 beds to the system by early 2025.

Phased Approach to Comprehensive Care

Egypt’s Comprehensive Health Insurance System has been rolled out in phases to systematically enhance healthcare access across the country. Phase One has successfully registered 5.4 million citizens, yielding 49.7 million medical procedures, 30.1 million family medicine services, and 620,000 surgeries, achieving a 90% satisfaction rate. Following this, the second phase targets 12.8 million citizens in various governorates with a budget of LE120 billion. This phase will bring forth 65 new hospitals and 516 primary care centers, offering expanded access and specialized care.

Advancements in Specialized Care and Mental Health

Egypt is also pioneering initiatives in specialized healthcare through integrated medical cities and state-of-the-art facilities. Projects such as the Capital Medical City for Research and Training will feature 4,223 beds and focus on enhancing medical research and training.

On the mental health front, recent programs are addressing addiction recovery and early interventions for autism. The Sakina Mental Health Hospital, a new 950-bed facility in New Alamein City, stands as a testament to Egypt’s commitment to supporting mental health initiatives.

With a robust plan to upgrade 150 hospitals, the healthcare ministry is also enriching its service offerings, adding vital capabilities such as open-heart surgeries and expanding ICU capacities. In terms of medical supplies, improved logistics have ensured a steady flow of essential items, including surgical tools and cardiac components.

Through these comprehensive reforms and strategic investments, Egypt is not only improving its medical infrastructure but is also moving towards a sustainable healthcare model that guarantees a healthier future for all its citizens. This evolution demonstrates Egypt’s commitment to nurturing a robust health system that delivers care universally and equally.
