The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway is celebrating a significant boost to its operations, thanks to a generous grant of £410,000 awarded by the UK government through the Community Ownership Fund. This funding will facilitate crucial repairs to three historically significant buildings located at Llanfair Caereinion station, ensuring that they remain integral to the community’s heritage and cultural fabric.
Originally constructed in the 1970s by the local council, these industrial buildings house important facilities, including two museums and the railway’s archives. Thanks to this grant, they will be able to avoid the fate of demolition, a prospect that loomed over them due to their deteriorating state. Instead, the funding will enable essential roof repairs and improvements to museum facilities, enhancing their capacity for public engagement and community activities.
Among these facilities is the ‘Llanfair Connections’ museum, which tells the story of the railway’s rich heritage and its international connections with countries such as Austria, Hungary, and Taiwan. The site also proudly hosts the Cloverlands Model Car Museum, showcasing an impressive collection of model motor vehicles. Since relocating to Llanfair Caereinion in 2022, this museum has witnessed a remarkable surge in visitor numbers. This funding not only secures the future of these institutions but also broadens their scope to educate and inspire visitors about railway history and engineering.
Moreover, the renovations promise to deliver significant benefits to the local community. With the town currently lacking suitable venues for events, these restored facilities will provide much-needed spaces for gatherings and activities, further invigorating the community spirit.
Iain McLean, Director and Vice-Chairman of the railway, expressed gratitude for the support received from local government and highlighted the positive implications of this grant. “This is great news. Saving this building means that we can go ahead with our plans to become an Accredited Museum… We hope to expand our museum with a model rail layout depicting our line, and to welcome local residents for community events,” he stated.
The commitment to preserving and enhancing these buildings not only protects local history but also enriches the lives of those in the Llanfair area. It’s a glowing example of how community efforts and government initiatives can come together to support cultural preservation and local engagement.
As the railway prepares for its upcoming Santa Specials, there’s a palpable excitement in the air. It’s not just a celebration of festive cheer; it’s a reaffirmation of the importance of community heritage and connection.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!
