In a heartening show of commitment to inclusivity, the Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its support for individuals with hearing loss and other disabilities. This timely pledge came during the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Lagos State Association of the Deaf (LSAD), an organization dedicated to breaking down barriers and fostering a more inclusive society. The event, which took place over the weekend in Surulere, Lagos, was themed ‘Amplifying the Leadership of Deaf for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,’ reflecting both the challenges and aspirations of the deaf community.
The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, took the opportunity to commend Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, the General Manager of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), for her unwavering advocacy in addressing the needs of people with disabilities (PWDs). Ogunlende emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that the voices of all citizens, including those with disabilities, are heard beyond election promises. “I am here today not because of the upcoming elections, but to reaffirm our dedication to support you in every possible way,” he stated in response to a participant’s concerns. This sentiment underlines the importance of continuous engagement and support for marginalized communities throughout all phases of governance.
Senator Tokunbo Abiru, who represents the Lagos East Senatorial District, echoed these sentiments. Through his aide, Ishaya Patience, he communicated that the current administration embraces all-inclusive governance focused on empowering PWDs. “We recognize your importance in our community, and your voices matter,” he said as he congratulated the stakeholders in attendance. Celebrating a remarkable milestone of 40 years, he praised the ongoing efforts to prioritize the needs of the deaf community.
Adding to the inspiring narrative, Dr. Mohammed Adebiyi, the keynote speaker, highlighted the necessity of innovative leadership within the deaf community to align with global inclusion trends. “Our goal is to shape a sustainable future for the next generation through proactive initiatives and leadership,” he reminded attendees. This forward-thinking approach aims not only to enhance awareness but also to drive real change.
Issac Usman, the Chairman of LSAD, expressed heartfelt gratitude towards those who have tirelessly supported the association’s mission over the years. The 40th anniversary celebration serves as a poignant reminder of the journey toward inclusivity and the collective role everyone plays in making it a reality.
As Nigeria continues to embrace inclusivity, it stands as a beacon of hope and progress for similar movements across Africa, encouraging other nations to prioritize the rights and needs of PWDs. With the Lagos State Government’s commitment to building an inclusive framework, the deaf community can look forward to a brighter, sustainable future.
