Exciting news is unfolding in Botswana as the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMi) Makers of Africa gears up to launch its innovative e-STEM Integration and Development training project for educators, in collaboration with the United States Embassy in Gaborone. This initiative, which promises to transform the educational landscape in the Kweneng District, aims to foster a world-class STEM workforce that will bolster Botswana’s economy.
Kelebogile Dennis Masina, the Country Coordinator for STEMi Makers of Africa in Botswana, emphasized that this project marks a significant milestone as it is the first of its kind in the country. Over the course of a year, the initiative aims to upskill 100 educators directly and impact an additional 550 educators indirectly. The focus is not only on knowledge enhancement but also on equipping these educators with hands-on experience in fields such as coding, robotics, and advanced technologies including drone tech and artificial intelligence.
Amanda Obidike, Executive Director of STEMi Makers of Africa, highlighted the organization’s extensive experience, noting that they have successfully executed projects in 19 African countries and currently operate offices in seven nations. This robust background positions them well to positively influence local education systems. The training program aims to empower educators by providing quality STEM resources and tools designed to enrich project-based learning, critical thinking, creativity, and innovation among students.
“We’re laying the groundwork for the next generation of educators in Botswana,” Obidike stated, expressing confidence that these individuals will inspire students and cultivate interest in STEM careers and sustainability initiatives.
The project is set to kick off in December 2024, featuring a comprehensive blend of technical training and mentorship, alongside assessments of schools, educators, and students. The end goal? A vibrant exhibition where over 8,200 students, along with their educators, can showcase their e-STEM projects, culminating in rewards that celebrate their innovative spirits.
Aligning with key thematic areas, the projects will address crucial topics such as environmental stewardship, cyber-technology, biodiversity, and sustainable food practices. Through this forward-thinking approach, STEMi Makers of Africa is not just cultivating a talented workforce, but also playing a vital role in addressing many of the challenges faced in today’s world.
It’s an inspiring move towards educational enhancement and sustainable development in Botswana, showcasing how empowering educators can lead to transformative changes in the economy and society as a whole.
