Meet Naapopye Anatoly Uulenga: Championing Inclusivity in Namibian Education
In the heart of Namibia, Naapopye Anatoly Uulenga is making waves as a passionate advocate for inclusivity in education. As a public servant in the education ministry, Uulenga, who lives with a hearing impairment, is breaking barriers and challenging perceptions about the capabilities of individuals with disabilities. His work as a sign language instructor in design and technology, as well as natural science, highlights the essential role of effective communication in education.
Uulenga firmly believes that recognizing sign language within Namibia’s National Assembly and Parliament is crucial. “This recognition would pave the way for interpreting services that enable our deaf community to engage deeply in election processes and political discussions broadcast on television,” he emphasized. His vision is nothing short of transformative, aiming for a society where all voices—regardless of ability—are heard.
But Uulenga’s impact extends far beyond the classroom. He is also an accomplished author and motivational speaker, showcasing his talents on international platforms like TEDx. His journey began in Grootfontein, a small town in north-central Namibia, where he cultivated a love for films with English subtitles, drawn to the inspiring messages of motivational speakers on YouTube. “Their encouragement fuels my determination to inspire others,” he shared.
Despite not having a traditional schooling experience initially, Uulenga successfully navigated his way through Cosmos High School and later the University of Namibia, earning a degree in education. His ambition to serve in public office stems from a desire to raise awareness about the abilities of individuals with disabilities and advocate for better services and job opportunities for all.
Uulenga faces challenges inherent to his role; he highlights the difficulties in adapting the existing curriculum to meet the needs of deaf learners, especially in subjects that rely heavily on auditory skills, like English. “It’s crucial to understand that deaf students often require more time and tailored support to thrive academically,” he explained.
The rewards of teaching, however, far outweigh the challenges for Uulenga. “I find joy in teaching mathematics and science. Creating an enjoyable learning atmosphere energizes both my students and me,” he said. His dedication to education is unwavering, and he plans to keep inspiring his students for at least another decade.
Looking ahead, Uulenga aspires to deepen his expertise by pursuing a master’s degree in inclusive education or sign language linguistics. His journey serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have within a community and the ongoing need for inclusivity in education.
