Welwitschia University Set to Transform Education Landscape in Usakos, Namibia
Exciting news is on the horizon for Usakos, a vibrant town located in Namibia’s Erongo Region! Welwitschia University has just announced its plans to establish a modern university campus in cooperation with the Usakos Town Council. This initiative, highlighted in a recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in Windhoek, promises to be a game-changer for local education and employment prospects.
With youth unemployment being a pressing issue in Usakos, the new university is expected to play a pivotal role in equipping young people with essential skills and training. “Usakos is one of the towns that has faced challenges with youth unemployment; therefore, this development is a welcome move for not just Usakos but the entire Erongo Region,” stated Mayor Irene Simeon-Kurtz. She emphasized that the university’s presence wouldn’t just serve Usakos but could also positively impact communities in nearby areas like Omaruru, Arandis, Karibeb, Walvis Bay, and Swakopmund.
Lesley Goreseb, the town’s CEO, echoed this sentiment, stating, “We are excited about how this MoU can transform our community. It’s critical that such agreements are put into action immediately, rather than just gathering dust on a shelf.” He urged for swift implementation strategies to ensure the agreement translates into real benefits for the unemployed youth.
The MoU lays a strong foundation for collaboration that extends well beyond traditional education. The two parties will work together to integrate work-based learning opportunities for students, develop research initiatives, and tackle pressing issues like health and environmental management, waste management, and sanitation. Additional areas of focus will include employee wellness programs, peri-urban agriculture, food security, and broader community education.
Professor Marius Hedimbi, Acting Vice Chancellor of Welwitschia University, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, “The aim is to foster collaboration, unity, and friendship between the university and the town council. We’re committed to facilitating student exchanges and accommodating staff to enrich our shared goals.”
The MoU is set to remain in effect for five years, with potential for renewal, ensuring a long-term commitment to educational and community development in Usakos. This initiative represents a significant leap forward for the town and the region, heralding a future full of opportunities for its youth.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development that could reshape the educational landscape of the region!
