Housing Minister Engages with Moroccan Community Leaders to Find Solutions for Queen’s Hotel Site Residents

Community Engagement: Government Explores Housing Solutions for Residents in Gibraltar

In a proactive move aimed at addressing housing concerns in Gibraltar, the Minister for Housing recently held discussions with prominent leaders from the Moroccan community, namely Ali Douissi and Somaya Chidad. This meeting took place against the backdrop of ongoing changes involving residents of the hostel located at the site of the old Queen’s Hotel.

Approximately 50 men currently residing in the hostel have been notified of an upcoming transition to the Sunrise Motel on Devil’s Tower Road. While this relocation is being organized to enhance living conditions, it has raised some questions and concerns about the amenities and overall environment at the Sunrise Motel. Residents and community leaders are keen to ensure that any relocation is both respectful and beneficial for all involved.

Pat Orfila, the Minister for Housing, underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring that all individuals who have paid their rent will not face any eviction. “We are dedicated to providing alternative hostel accommodations that are not only acceptable but also improve the quality of living for these residents,” she stated. This assurance is crucial in alleviating some of the anxiety surrounding the move.

However, Orfila emphasized that while the government is working diligently to meet the needs of its residents, it will not be swayed by attempts to manipulate the situation for personal gain. This stance reflects a broader commitment to equitable housing solutions in Gibraltar, ensuring transparency and fairness as the community navigates these changes.

The dialogue between the Minister and community leaders illustrates a collaborative approach to governance, fostering a spirit of unity and understanding within the diverse population of Gibraltar. As discussions continue, there is optimism that the effort will lead to enhanced living conditions, ultimately benefitting all residents involved.

As Gibraltar looks to evolve its housing infrastructure, such community-focused initiatives are vital for ensuring that everyone has access to safe and comfortable living environments. This development not only supports the local community but also sets a precedent for future engagement and collaboration between residents and government officials.

Stay tuned as this story develops, and let’s continue to champion positive community changes in our vibrant and diverse city!
