Hajara Ahmad Takes the Spotlight in 2024’s Exciting Storytelling Competition!

In an inspiring showcase of talent and creativity, Hajara Ahmad Hussain has been crowned the winner of the prestigious BBC Hausa Service 2024 storytelling competition. Hailing from a vibrant community, Hajara is not just a gifted storyteller but also a dedicated mother of five, adding a personal touch to her remarkable achievement. Her winning story, ‘Amon Yanci,’ follows the journey of a young woman named Aminatu as she navigates life’s challenges, resonating with many who have walked similar paths.

The awards ceremony, hosted at the luxurious Abuja Continental Hotel on a memorable Wednesday, was a celebration of female writers making waves in the literary world. Besides Hajara’s impressive victory, two other talented storytellers were honored for their contributions. Amra Awwal Mashi claimed the second place with her compelling narrative, ‘Kura a Rumbu,’ earning herself a cash prize of ₦750,000 along with a certificate of recognition. Meanwhile, Zainab Muhammad Chubado secured third place for her evocative tale, ‘Tsalle Daya,’ taking home ₦500,000 and, of course, a certificate that celebrates her literary excellence.

The Hikayata competition is more than just a contest; it serves as a powerful platform for women writers—both seasoned professionals and eager amateurs. The initiative encourages the storytelling skills of women, allowing their voices to resonate across the Hausa-speaking community and beyond. This year, BBC Hausa proudly received approximately 450 submissions from creative writers eager to share their unique perspectives and narratives. After thorough evaluations, about 400 stories advanced to the first round, judged by a panel of esteemed university professors and experts in the Hausa language.

Beyond the prizes, events like the Hikayata competition are key in promoting cultural narratives and giving women writers much-deserved visibility in the literary landscape. Hajara’s triumph is a testament to the depth of talent in Nigeria and the power of storytelling to uplift lives.
