In a significant move to enhance the welfare of its civil servants, the Zambian government has announced a salary increment of 500 kwacha across all departments, set to take effect from January 1st, 2025. This decision was unveiled during a media briefing held by Joy Beene, the Union Representative and Team Leader, who represented 23 different public workers’ unions.
The agreement for the salary raise comes after extensive negotiations between the unions and the government, with a shared goal of improving salaries and conditions of service for civil servants. While the increase is a positive step, Mr. Beene candidly acknowledged that it might not fully meet the aspirations of all union members. “As unions, we acknowledge that this may not be the best that our members wanted; however, this was the best compromise between the unions and the government,” he stated.
The need for a balanced approach was emphasized, particularly given the current economic climate in Zambia. Recognizing the challenging circumstances, the unions opted for a compromise that, while modest, aims to create a stable environment for public servants.
In a further empowering initiative, the government has also increased transport allowances for public workers living with disabilities from 20% to 35% of their basic salary, marking the first adjustment in a decade. This progressive change underscores a commitment to inclusivity and support for vulnerable workers within the civil service. Additionally, the meal allowance will see an increase from K130 to K150, along with a K1,300 boost to the repatriation allowance—both effective from the same date in January 2025.
This year’s raise aligns with last year’s decision to provide civil servants with a 550 kwacha increase, showcasing a continuous effort by the Zambian government to enhance the livelihoods of its public service workforce.
As Zambia navigates economic pressures while striving to ensure fair compensation for its civil servants, this recent development is a reminder of the government’s dedication to social responsibility. Citizens and public sector employees alike will be watching closely as these changes unfold, hopeful that they lead to improved quality of life across communities in Zambia.
