Egypt Hosts Climathon Conference to Champion Climate Awareness
CAIRO – On November 2, 2024, Environment Minister Yasmin Fouad proudly announced the kickoff of the 2024 Climathon conference, hosted in the dynamic region of Upper Egypt. This year’s theme, “Climathon Upper Egypt – For Sustainable and Urban Cities,” signals a powerful commitment to tackling pressing climate change issues while fostering urban sustainability across the nation.
The conference took place in the vibrant Qena governorate and was part of the National Solid Waste Management Program/EU Green initiative. It was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Egyptian Environment Ministry and the European Union, alongside the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ). These partnerships are crucial for establishing effective strategies in waste management and urban resilience in the face of climate challenges.
Prominent figures at the event included Qena’s governor, Khaled Abdel Haleem, alongside a range of officials from various agencies, environmental experts, and technicians. The conference proudly welcomed around 100 university students and graduates from Upper Egypt, emphasizing the importance of involving the younger generation in crucial environmental discussions.
Minister Fouad highlighted the significance of this initiative as a stepping stone toward raising awareness among youth regarding climate change and environmental sustainability. By engaging students and young professionals, the Climathon aims to cultivate a generation that is informed and proactive about tackling climate-related challenges in their communities.
The focus on urban sustainability is particularly vital, given the rapid urbanization trends in Egypt. Cities are often the frontline battlegrounds for climate change impacts, making it essential for urban planning and public policies to prioritize sustainable practices. The conference served as a platform for participants to share innovative ideas, best practices, and actionable strategies to enhance urban living while mitigating environmental footprints.
As Egypt continues to position itself as a leader in addressing climate issues, events like the Climathon are not just timely; they are essential to realizing a sustainable future. With such initiatives, the country is moving toward a greener, cleaner, and more resilient tomorrow.
