Royal Cornwall Museum Takes a Unique Approach for Refurbishment

In an innovative move, the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro is embarking on a creative two-month tour, bringing a slice of cultural history directly to local communities. With the museum set to close for much-needed refurbishment, its dedicated team has devised an engaging way to keep the spirit of learning alive by offering workshops on Ancient Egypt and Victorian Toys at eight public libraries across Cornwall. This initiative, in partnership with the Education Library Service Bus, is set to run throughout January and February.

Artistic director Bryony Robins shared the enthusiasm surrounding this initiative, stating, “This will enable us to reach more school children in a short space of time than ever before, while the physical space undergoes an exciting refresh ready to reopen in early spring 2025.” This exciting approach not only enriches the educational experience for children but also strengthens community ties, ensuring that the museum remains a focal point of cultural education even while the building is undergoing transformational changes.

Visitors to the libraries will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on workshops that bring history to life. Kids can discover the wonders of Ancient Egypt, learning about the pyramids, mummies, and the fascinating mythology that defined a civilization. Meanwhile, the Victorian Toys workshop will transport them back in time, exploring the playful ingenuity of the Victorian era. This blend of education and entertainment not only makes history more accessible but also ignites a passion for culture and learning.

As the museum prepares for its grand reopening, the anticipation is palpable. When the refurbishment is completed in spring 2025, visitors can expect a rejuvenated space that enhances the overall visitor experience. The Royal Cornwall Museum’s commitment to education and cultural engagement exemplifies the importance of community-focused initiatives, especially in challenging times.

This vibrant collaboration between the museum and local libraries serves as a testament to the power of creativity and adaptability in education. By transforming a temporary setback into an opportunity for outreach, the Royal Cornwall Museum sets a positive example for cultural institutions everywhere.
