Celebrating Sustainability: Municipalities Shine in Portugal’s ECOXXI Flag Awards

The Blue Flag Association for the Environment and Education (ABAAE) has recognized 61 municipalities across Portugal with the distinguished ECOXXI Flag for their outstanding commitment to sustainable development and environmental management. This recognition is part of a comprehensive evaluation that each municipality underwent, measuring their efforts against a rigorous global index that assesses 21 key indicators and 70 sub-indicators of public policies.

Among the celebrated municipalities are prominent names such as Lagos, Braga, Sintra, and Cascais, highlighting a collective commitment to environmental preservation. This year, out of 62 applications, the high success rate reflects the dedication of these municipalities to fostering a sustainable future. The indicators evaluated include the promotion of environmental education, enhancement of public spaces, climate change mitigation strategies, and overall community engagement in sustainability efforts.

In a recent statement, ABAAE praised the positive results, noting that the evaluators recognized the “good practices developed in favor of sustainable development,” which align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This ongoing approach towards environmental stewardship not only benefits the local populations but also sets a benchmark for other regions striving to attain similar sustainability goals.

For municipalities to qualify for the ECOXXI Flag, they must present detailed reports showcasing the sustainable actions and initiatives implemented in the previous year. These reports are meticulously reviewed by an expert panel from the National Commission, which comprises over 30 entities dedicated to environmental advocacy and education.

The ECOXXI Program has been a cornerstone of Portugal’s environmental strategy for over 15 years. It celebrates local governments that prioritize eco-friendly practices, fostering a climate-conscious society. The award ceremony is set to take place this afternoon at Casa das Histórias Paula Rego in Cascais, graced by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, a significant step toward recognizing and amplifying the efforts of local leaders in sustainability.

Portugal continues to showcase itself as a leader in environmental initiatives, encouraging other nations to mirror their commitment towards a greener planet. This initiative not only supports immediate communities but also contributes positively to global environmental goals.
