Granadilla de Abona Launches Emergency Water Supply Project for Local Communities
In a bold move to enhance the quality of life for its residents, the Granadilla de Abona Town Council has kicked off an emergency project aimed specifically at improving access to potable water in the beautiful communities of Los Abrigos, La Mareta, and Sotavento. This initiative comes on the heels of rising concerns regarding the aging water infrastructure and is poised to make a significant impact on the daily lives of local residents.
Led by Mayor Jennifer Miranda and Municipal Public Works and Services Councillor Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, a team visited the Casablanca region to mark the beginning of this crucial construction. The project, budgeted at approximately 450,000 euros, involves the replacement of a four-kilometre stretch of piping that connects three key areas—Casablanca, Sotavento, and La Mareta—before finally reaching Los Abrigos. This upgrade is not just a cosmetic fix but a necessary overhaul to ensure a reliable water supply for years to come.
Over the past few years, the existing water infrastructure, which has served the community well for over three decades, has reached a point of significant deterioration. The facility responsible for desalination, while essential, has been contributing to high alkalinity levels that have led to an accumulation of iron in the water. Residents have occasionally expressed concerns about the brown hue of the water, prompting the urgent need for this initiative.
At the signing ceremony, Mayor Miranda emphasized that the project was classified as an emergency during an extraordinary plenary session, underscoring its critical importance to public health. She reaffirmed that upgrading the water system is not just about immediate fixes; it’s about making a long-term investment in the community’s infrastructure and quality of life.
To ensure that residents are not left high and dry during the construction period, the council announced plans for two alternative water supply points in Sotavento and Los Abrigos. These supply points will operate continuously during the duration of the project, guaranteeing that residents have uninterrupted access to clean water.
As this project unfolds, the Granadilla de Abona Town Council is committed to closely overseeing the execution of the work, ensuring that it meets established timelines and quality standards. This initiative is more than just a response to a technical challenge; it’s a profound demonstration of the Town Council’s dedication to its community’s well-being and sustainable development.
