Three South African Startups Secure 5K in Debt and Grant Funding to Fuel Innovation and Growth!

Innovative South African Startups Secure Funding to Boost Social Impact

In a significant boost for social entrepreneurship in South Africa, three dynamic startups – Respo, Syked, and Word of Mouth – have successfully raised a combined total of ZAR3 million (roughly US5,000) in funding. This investment comes courtesy of the SAB Foundation’s Social Innovation Accelerator and Fund (SIF), an initiative dedicated to supporting the country’s brightest social enterprises.

Launched in 2017 and expertly managed by Impact Amplifier, the SIF provides critical investment readiness and funding support to social ventures focused on tackling pressing societal challenges. The program not only provides financial assistance but also equips entrepreneurs with the essential skills necessary to attract further investment.

The recent conclusion of the seventh edition of the Investment Readiness Programme saw these innovative startups presenting their business models to the SAB Foundation, ultimately convincing them of their potential impact.

1. Respo has made headlines for developing an app designed to offer affordable private ambulance services to lower-income communities in South Africa. This innovative solution seeks to address the often-overlooked healthcare gap, ensuring that emergency medical services are accessible to everyone.

2. Syked is transforming mental health care in the country with its online wellness platform. By providing secure video counselling sessions, Syked is breaking down barriers to mental health access, making support much more attainable for those facing challenges.

3. Word of Mouth is revolutionizing the informal economy through its end-to-end e-commerce platform, which empowers informal entrepreneurs. By creating an accessible marketplace, Word of Mouth opens doors for traders who traditionally lack digital representation, stimulating local economies.

As Impact Amplifier and the SAB Foundation gear up to select the eighth cohort of the SIF, we are excited to see how these initiatives continue to foster innovation and uplift communities throughout South Africa.

These advancements highlight the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit present in the nation and the commitment to harnessing it for social good. With the support of foundational programs like the SIF, South African startups are set to lead the way in creating sustainable and impactful changes for future generations.
