Southern Province Celebrates Historic Milestone: 100% Coverage of HIV Treatment for All!

In a remarkable stride toward public health, Southern Province has achieved a significant milestone by providing 100% treatment coverage for HIV patients over the past year. This encouraging news was shared by Provincial Permanent Secretary Namani Monze at the 2024 Annual Performance Review Meeting for the TB/HIV programme, held in the picturesque town of Livingstone.

Dr. Monze emphasized the importance of this achievement, especially considering the findings from the ZAMPHIA 2021 report, which ranks Southern Province third in HIV prevalence at 13.2%, trailing only Lusaka and the Copperbelt. This highlights the crucial need for ongoing health interventions in the region. Fighting against such statistics is no small feat, and this success story serves as a beacon of hope for vulnerable populations in Southern Province.

While addressing the audience, Southern Province Health Director Dr. Callistus Kaayunga outlined their commitment to meeting the United Nations’ three 95s targets for HIV and TB prevention and treatment, which aim for 95% of people living with HIV to know their status, 95% of those diagnosed to receive sustained antiretroviral therapy, and 95% of those on treatment to achieve viral suppression. Dr. Kaayunga also highlighted the province’s strategic investments made during the 2024 financial year. Key developments include enhanced infrastructure, solar backup systems, and improved medical furniture, all aimed at bolstering the healthcare delivery system.

Additionally, Southern Province is rolling out an ambitious five-year TB and HIV prevention and treatment programme, bolstered by support from the esteemed Centres for Disease Control (CDC). This initiative not only aims to curb infections but has also created direct employment opportunities for 409 health personnel, thereby contributing to the local economy and empowering the community.

These advances in health service delivery make Southern Province a transformative example in the fight against HIV and TB in Africa. As the region continues to combat these challenges, the dedication of health authorities and the community remains a cornerstone of success.
