Egypt and Eni Team Up to Boost Zohr Gas Production
Exciting developments are on the horizon for Egypt’s energy sector! The Ministry of Petroleum in Egypt has reached a crucial agreement with the Italian energy company Eni to resume drilling activities in the much-anticipated Zohr gas field this coming December. This collaboration promises to reignite production rates and significantly bolster Egypt’s gas output, strategically aligning with the country’s goal to reduce its energy import costs.
Egyptian Minister of Petroleum, Karim Badawi, announced the groundbreaking deal, highlighting that two new wells will be drilled, with expected production rates ramping up to an impressive 220 million cubic meters per day. This initiative is set to restore operations to the levels seen prior to the temporarily halted drilling activities, ensuring that Egypt remains a key player in the natural gas market.
Moreover, the Minister shared that discussions with BP are underway to expedite the second phase of the Raven gas field, projected to produce around 200 million cubic feet per day by January 2025. Such moves reinforce Egypt’s commitment to enhancing its domestic energy production, ultimately leading to a significant reduction in the national import bill.
Adding to the positive narrative, the Egyptian government has also entered an agreement with Apache Company. This deal encompasses the allocation of four exploration areas in the Western Desert, aiming to fast-track their deployment into production. Minister Badawi emphasized the importance of locally produced oil and gas, stating that every cubic meter produced contributes to greater energy independence and economic sustainability for Egypt.
While it’s worth noting that Egypt recently increased fuel prices by 11 to 17 percent to address budget constraints, the government continues to allocate significant resources—about 10 billion Egyptian pounds (5.34 million) per month—toward fuel subsidies. This balancing act reflects the government’s commitment to managing economic stability while ensuring energy availability for its citizens.
As Egypt continues to invest in its energy infrastructure and production capabilities, it undoubtedly paves the way for a more prosperous and self-sufficient future. The collaboration with Eni not only strengthens international relations but also positions Egypt as a vital hub in the global energy landscape.
