KZN Shines at RCL Foods Chefs and Bakers Challenge: Celebrating Culinary Excellence
The culinary scene in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has just gotten a delicious boost! The RCL Foods Chefs and Bakers Challenge highlighted the exceptional talent emerging from this vibrant region, culminating in a thrilling contest held at The Capsicum Culinary Studio in Durban. This year, the event showcased individual and team skills, creativity, and a fervent passion for culinary arts, bringing together some of the most promising young chefs and bakers.
In the heat of the kitchen, the duo of Joel Gayapersad and Liam Nair from the renowned 1000 Hills Chef School emerged as the overall champions. Not only did they take home the coveted title, but they also clinched the GeoChem hygiene prize, underscoring their commitment to cleanliness and safety in the kitchen. As kitchen practices are paramount in any food preparation scenario, their recognition for exceptional hygiene practices sets a standard for others to aspire to.
Boosting their culinary accolades further, Sinqobile Mtshali and Thembisile Gugu Mthembu, also from 1000 Hills Chef School, won the prestigious Callebaut Best Dessert award for their outstanding chocolate creation. Their success highlights the school’s commitment to excellence and innovation in the culinary arts.
The competition was fierce, with teams showcasing their skills through a mystery basket challenge that required them to prepare a trio of stunning dishes. Contestants had just 90 minutes to craft a main course featuring plant-based ingredients, beef fillet, and chicken thighs. The pressure was palpable, especially as each competitor also had to replicate a pre-submitted dessert recipe under challenging kitchen conditions, including high humidity, which could greatly affect flavor and presentation.
Judged by a panel led by Chef James Khoza, the President of the South African Chefs Association, the high standard displayed by the participants was a testament to the growing talent in the country’s culinary landscape. Khoza praised the competitors, evidenced by the rigorous and rewarding competition.
Celebrations didn’t stop with the titles; Gayapersad and Nair received R30,000 in prize money, and their school was honored with R5,000 for fostering such talent. Meanwhile, Mtshali and Mthembu enjoyed a prize that will stimulate their dessert-making skills even further — an all-inclusive Chocolate 2.0 course at the Chocolate Academy, valued at R11,700.
As more young chefs step into the spotlight across South Africa, events like the RCL Foods Chefs and Bakers Challenge pave the way for future culinary stars. Whether you’re a cooking enthusiast, a professional chef, or just someone who loves good food, this reinvigorated culinary culture is something to celebrate!
