Celebrating Cinema: Filmmaker Maryam Touzani Excited to Join the Jury at the Angoulême French-Speaking Film Festival!

The vibrant city of Angoulême has rolled out the red carpet for the 17th edition of the Festival Francophone d’Angoulême (FFA), a prestigious celebration and showcase of French-speaking cinema. The festival is not only a feast for film enthusiasts but also an important cultural rendezvous for filmmakers, with a focus on sharing stories and experiences that resonate on a deeply human level.

Maryam Touzani, a celebrated Moroccan filmmaker known for her impactful works “Adam” (2019) and “Le Bleu du Caftan” (2022), has expressed her delight at being part of this year’s jury. “It’s a real pleasure for me to be in Angoulême again. It’s a festival that I love very much and which is close to my heart,” she said, reflecting on her longstanding connection to this exceptional event. Under the leadership of the esteemed Franco-British actress Kristin Scott Thomas, the jury will assess ten films vying for the coveted “Valois d’Or.”

A passionate advocate for Moroccan cinema, Touzani acknowledged the festival’s effort to highlight Moroccan filmmakers who are increasingly making their mark on the global stage. “Moroccan cinema is taking a very important place today, with talented filmmakers who have a lot to say,” she remarked. This year, the festival features an impressive selection of fifteen Moroccan films, from historic entries like “Fils Maudit” by Mohamed Ousfour to contemporary hits such as “Everybody Loves Touda” by Nabil Ayouch, underscoring the diverse and rich narratives emerging from the region.

Touzani emphasized the importance of cinema as a medium for fostering connections, allowing storytellers to share their visions while inviting audiences to step into different worlds. “What I like about cinema is this sharing,” she noted, highlighting the festival’s role as a melting pot of culture and creativity.

As the FFA brings together filmmakers and audiences in the picturesque town of Angoulême, it has proudly waved the Moroccan flag as this year’s guest of honor. This symbolic gesture not only celebrates the richness of Moroccan cinema but also promotes a greater understanding of the cultural tapestry that defines French-speaking cinema.

Looking ahead, Touzani is preparing her next film, a short feature set in her hometown of Tangier, which she describes as “a bit of a homecoming.” Drawing on her personal experiences, she hopes this project will resonate with audiences on a profound level.

As the festival buzzes with excitement, it presents over sixty films, with ten in competition and many more in preview, ensuring that the cultural spotlight is firmly centered on the wealth of storytelling emerging from French-speaking filmmakers. Indeed, the FFA stands as a testament to the shared passion for cinema that transcends borders, making it an unmissable event on the cultural calendar of France and the Francophone world.
