Cairo Unveils Al-Jabakhana Park: A New Oasis for Residents of Ezbet Khairallah

By Africazine

In an exciting development for the community of Ezbet Khairallah in Old Cairo, Governor Ibrahim Saber graced the inauguration of Al-Jabakhana Park yesterday, a project that promises to redefine the local landscape into a vibrant public space for recreation and sports. Once considered an unsafe area, this transformation is set to benefit residents and enhance their quality of life significantly.

Constructed at an estimated cost of LE40 million, Al-Jabakhana Park boasts a variety of features including expansive open spaces, sports fields, children’s playgrounds, and even a theatre. This remarkable project emerged from a fruitful collaboration between the Cairo Governorate and the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (MESMEDA), with generous funding from the French Development Agency and the European Union (EU).

The ceremonial opening was a star-studded affair, featuring esteemed attendees such as French Ambassador to Egypt Eric Chevallier and Ann Shaw, the Head of the EU Delegation in Egypt, indicating strong international backing for local development projects. MESMEDA CEO Basil Rahmi also highlighted the significance of this park as part of the broader agenda to uplift communities in need.

Governor Saber emphasized that this park aligns with political leaders’ vision to enhance the living standards for citizens in underprivileged areas, particularly as Cairo gears up to host the upcoming World Urban Forum next week. “We are devoted to upgrading unsafe areas and enhancing the services provided within them,” he remarked. The plan seeks to transform such regions by the end of 2024 while ensuring service quality improves concurrently.

Al-Jabakhana Park is not just another green space; it forms part of an extensive suite of developmental projects in areas like Zawya El-Hamra and Istabl Antar, collectively benefiting over a million residents. The funding partnership with the French Development Agency and the EU is instrumental in making these improvements possible.

To ensure Al-Jabakhana Park remains a thriving community hub, the governorate will be partnering with Tawasol Association, a local NGO, aiming to manage the park effectively and deliver quality services.

This initiative represents not only a commitment to urban revitalization but also showcases how international partnerships can play a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life for many. As Al-Jabakhana Park opens its gates, it stands as a beacon of hope for the Ezbet Khairallah community, where families and children can enjoy a safe and inviting environment.
