Durham University’s Palace Green Library Unveils Innovative Zünd S3 Cutter for Conservation Efforts

In a significant development for the preservation of historical artifacts, the Palace Green Library at Durham University has just received a state-of-the-art Zünd S3 M-1600 digital cutter. This advanced technology will play a crucial role in creating protective packaging and boxes, ensuring that the library’s extensive historical collection remains safeguarded for future generations.

Located in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between the impressive Durham Castle and the majestic Cathedral, Palace Green Library houses invaluable collections that reflect humanity’s enduring quest for knowledge. The library manages a treasure trove of manuscripts that date back to before the Norman conquest, as well as rare printed books and a diverse range of museum objects. The nearby Oriental Museum enriches this experience further, dedicated to the art and archaeology of Northern Africa and Asia, showcasing influences that span from Ancient Egypt to modern-day China.

Earlier this year, the collections department embarked on a thorough review of their conservation processes in search of more efficient, flexible, and cost-effective methods. Senior Collections Care and Conservation Manager Tony King underscored the importance of protective packaging in the overall care of these irreplaceable items. Noting the labor-intensive nature of crafting custom boxes by hand and the high costs of specialized options, King explored digital cutting techniques adopted by institutions across the globe. This research led him to the Zünd Digital Cutters, which have gained recognition for their precision and efficiency in similar settings.

Palace Green Library took a proactive approach by engaging Zünd UK for a product demonstration, facilitated by Arden Software. The library team had the opportunity to test various models, ultimately choosing the S3 cutter for its unbeatable design quality and versatility. “During the demonstration, we were introduced to both the Zünd G3 and S3 digital cutters,” King shared. “However, the S3 quickly proved to be the optimal choice for our needs. We conducted rigorous tests on various materials, including archival box board, dense millboard, protective cloth, and foam.”

This cutting-edge equipment will not only enhance the library’s capability to protect its unique collections but also pave the way for more innovative conservation methods. With this significant investment, Durham University showcases its commitment to preserving history while simultaneously embracing modern technological advancements.

For anyone passionate about the importance of cultural preservation and innovation, this development at the Palace Green Library is undoubtedly a thrilling chapter in the ongoing narrative of protecting our shared heritage.
