Nigeria Launches Groundbreaking Transport Fare Drop Programme to Promote Clean Energy Use

By Africazine

In a significant move towards environmental sustainability and cost-effective transportation, the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has launched a Transport Fare Drop Programme across Nigeria. Kicking off on Friday in Abuja, this initiative is designed to promote the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels, ensuring both affordability and eco-friendliness for commuters.

The Programme Director and Chief Executive of PCNGI, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, emphasized the importance of this initiative in a recent statement. He noted that the move is not just about reducing transport fares, but it’s also about paving the way for a greener future in Nigeria’s transport sector. By adopting CNG, which burns cleaner than petrol or diesel, Nigeria can significantly lower its carbon emissions while providing commuters with an economically viable transport option.

As part of the initiative, representatives from PCNGI recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). This collaboration, which covers the Abuja to Itakpe Station—Ajaokuta Train Station—Adavi route, aims to incentivize NURTW members to convert their vehicles to run on CNG. In return for this shift, drivers will enjoy a remarkable reduction in fares, ranging from 30-40%. This partnership not only reflects a commitment to cleaner transportation but also demonstrates a shared vision for the future.

But that’s not all! On September 28, the PCNGI will continue to spread this green message by hosting open days across 38 centers in key locations, including Kaduna, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and Delta. These events will provide commercial vehicle owners with all the information they need to make the switch to CNG seamlessly, thus ensuring broad participation in this initiative.

In conclusion, with the Transportation Fare Drop Programme, Nigeria is setting an inspiring example for other African countries looking to enhance their environmental policies while boosting public transport accessibility. As this initiative unfolds, it’s clear that the nation isn’t just driving towards a more sustainable future; it’s making strides toward a cleaner and more economical way for its citizens to travel.
