Celebrating Compassionate Care: Great River Health DAISY Awards Honor Extraordinary Nurses
Great River Health recently celebrated the remarkable dedication of its nursing staff by presenting the esteemed DAISY Awards for Extraordinary Nurses. As part of the DAISY Foundation’s mission, the awards shine a spotlight on the exceptional, compassionate care that nurses provide daily to patients and their families. This initiative not only recognizes individual achievement but also emphasizes the vital role nurses play in the healthcare ecosystem.
The most recent awardees, Marissa Gibb and Dana Strawhacker, have demonstrated incredible commitment and tenderness in their patient care, turning difficult times into moments of comfort and dignity.
Marissa Gibb, RN, serves as a Case Manager at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House. Her nomination came from a co-worker who witnessed the profound impact she had on the family of a patient facing homelessness. After the patient was admitted to hospice and sadly passed away just three days later, Marissa stepped in to support the grieving son. Recognizing his immediate need for shelter, she not only provided emotional comfort but also worked tirelessly to secure housing options for him during a time of vulnerability. Marissa’s actions exemplify her relentless advocacy for her patients, always striving to perceive their needs through the lens of compassion.
Dana Strawhacker, another shining star in the nursing community, is a Registered Nurse at the Medical Care Unit of Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center. Her dedication was acknowledged by multiple family members of a patient in her care. They shared heartfelt memories of how Dana was not just a nurse but a comforting presence during their mother’s final moments. From tirelessly administering medication to holding their hands and sharing in their memories, Dana’s compassion made a lasting impression on the entire family. One family member recalled, “After spending that much time with us, she was essentially family!” Dana not only eased their mother’s passing with grace but also supported the family wholeheartedly during an immensely emotional experience.
Both Marissa and Dana were celebrated in a special ceremony attended by their colleagues, patients, and visitors. Each honoree received a commendation certificate praising their “Extraordinary Nurse” contributions, along with a DAISY Award pin and a beautifully carved sculpture titled “A Healer’s Touch,” crafted by talented artists from the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. This honor connects them with honorees worldwide, highlighting the universal nature of compassionate care.
