Father-Son Duo Transforms Santa Cruz Beach into Spectacular Art Exhibit with Sand Pyramids

In an exciting artistic endeavor that’s capturing attention across California, Jim Denevan and his son, Brighton, are turning Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz into a mesmerizing landscape of sand pyramids. As part of the captivating “Pyramids” project, this dynamic duo has enlisted the help of passionate volunteers to construct a stunning total of 380 sand pyramids, some soaring over six feet tall!

Inspired by the grandeur of the Great Pyramids of Egypt, Jim shares, “It’s a reference to the most well-known pyramid in Egypt, just in the sense it has the same angle, same four sides, and same steepness.” But this isn’t just an artistic homage—it’s an interactive experience for those who wander amongst these sandy structures. “When you walk through, you can reference maybe Egypt. But yes, it’s definitely its own unique creation,” he adds.

The “Pyramids” project is gaining traction as a significant highlight of the Common Ground Art Festival, commissioned by the esteemed Santa Cruz Museum of Art. This festival, which runs through the upcoming weekend, showcases a variety of artistic expressions that celebrate community and nature. Anyone in the area is encouraged to check it out before the sands eventually reclaim their territory, as the entire exhibition is designed to be temporary. According to volunteer Cindy Martino, “It’s creating beauty from nature. Nature’s already beautiful, but somebody is making it even more beautiful. They’re creating art, and it’s temporary. It’s going to go back to nature, so there’s no waste.”

If you’re planning to visit Cowell Beach to witness this unique installation, the best time to enjoy the mesmerizing silhouettes of the pyramids is during the late afternoon. As the sun sets, the long shadows cast by these magnificent sand structures create a breathtaking visual spectacle that brings the artwork to life in a whole new way.

The creative project is set to wrap up on Tuesday evening, so make sure you don’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in a blend of nature and artistry right on the California coast!

As art continues to evolve, the interaction between nature and creativity flourishes, showcasing the power of human expression in harmony with the environment. Don’t forget to share your experience if you check it out!
