Title: Transforming the New Valley: Egypt’s Investments in Water and Infrastructure
The Egyptian government is making significant strides in improving living conditions in the New Valley Governorate, underscoring its commitment to sustainable development and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. According to Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, Sherif Sherbiny, over the past decade, a remarkable 16 potable water projects have been successfully completed, marking a milestone in water accessibility and sanitation in the region.
These 16 state-of-the-art potable water plants boast a combined daily capacity of 95,400 cubic meters, reflecting a substantial investment in essential services. Alongside the water projects, eight sewage treatment plants have been established, amounting to a total expenditure of EGP 716.5 million. The funding for these critical initiatives came from the National Organisation for Potable Water and Sanitary Drainage (NOPWASD), highlighting the government’s dedicated approach to improving infrastructure.
But the advancements don’t stop there. Currently, 18 new potable water plants are under construction, intended to further enhance water supply and increase pressure in the region. These projects, costing EGP 536 million, are set to significantly boost water service availability. In addition, three new sewage projects are also being implemented, with an investment of EGP 385 million aimed at promoting better waste management and sanitation systems.
In broader terms, the government’s efforts have connected 25 rural areas—representing 42.4% of the rural regions in the New Valley—to sewage systems, benefitting approximately 62,000 residents, or 45.4% of the rural population. Plans are in place to extend water and sewage services to an additional six rural areas, expanding access to clean water and sanitation for another 23,000 residents.
Since 2014, the Central Agency for Reconstruction has initiated a transformative 60 development project program in the New Valley, with an investment nearing EGP 6.47 billion. This ambitious project aims not only to enhance living conditions but also to stimulate regional development through improved infrastructure.
Road development is also a key focus, with 880 kilometers of new roads being constructed at an impressive cost of EGP 5.4 billion. These roads are designed to facilitate trade by improving transportation links between production areas and markets.
Moreover, to address the increasing demand for housing, the government is constructing 2,096 residential units and shops at a total cost of EGP 628 million. An additional EGP 450 million is being allocated to bolster infrastructure and public services.
These efforts represent a significant commitment by the Egyptian government to foster growth and improve living standards in the New Valley Governorate. As these projects come to fruition, they promise not only to provide essential services but also to uplift communities and drive sustainable development in the region.
