Dickey Lake Community Rallies for a Heartfelt Cause
In a heartwarming initiative that showcases community spirit and generosity, the Shawano Ratepayers Inc. on Dickey Lake have once again demonstrated their commitment to supporting local healthcare. This year, the group organized their annual swim fundraiser, raising an impressive ,486 for the Quinte North Hastings Hospital. The cheque presentation took place on September 5, marking another successful chapter in a tradition that honors the late Diane Warden’s husband, who passed away in 1996.
The origins of this touching initiative can be traced back to a community event known as Dickey Day. It all began when cottager Sandy McMullen decided to swim for Eritrea, and soon after, Diane Warden joined the cause as well. Over the years, the focus shifted from international contributions to local needs, ultimately leading to the decision to support the hospital, particularly after Warden’s personal loss. Since then, the marathon swim event has become an annual tradition, with the funds directed toward acquiring necessary medical equipment.
In 2022, the event reached new heights, raising a record ,575 as part of the Back the Cat fundraising campaign aimed at securing a CT scanner for the hospital. The funds raised are critically important, especially in areas where access to advanced medical equipment can significantly impact patient care.
Diane Warden, a pillar of this initiative, continues to inspire many, remaining an active member of her community. “People are very generous. We received plenty of bills this year,” she shared. For her, participating in the fundraiser provides not just a sense of purpose, but also a way to engage socially with neighbors and foster community ties.
Tammy Davis, the hospital site manager and board member of the North Hastings Fund Development Committee, expressed her admiration for the Shawano Ratepayers. “Diane always leaves us in awe with her energy and passion for fundraising. She goes door-to-door, encouraging participation and sharing her stories,” Davis said. “Her enthusiasm is infectious, and she serves as a fantastic role model for everyone in our community.”
The successful fundraiser not only enhances the hospital’s capacity to provide quality care but also exemplifies the strength of community bonds in creating a healthier future. With events like these, the residents of Dickey Lake prove that through collective efforts, they can make a significant impact right in their own backyard.
As communities continue to support their local hospitals, we are reminded of the enduring spirit of togetherness that resonates across the globe, fostering resilience and hope in challenging times.
