Nigeria clinched a 1-0 in a thrilling clash at Alassane Ouattara Stadium, Abidjan, on Thursday.
Captain, William Troost-Ekong, who netted the sole goal through a second-half penalty after Victor Osimhen was fouled, emphasized the importance of the win.
“This game against Ivory Coast was a big statement game for us,” Ekong told reporters after the game. “We needed to win and make a statement in a competition like the AFCON.”
“Ivory Coast has a squad with a lot of quality players, so I believe we deserved this win. We have talented players capable of making an impact, and our focus from the start to the end was unwavering.”
Acknowledging the tactical masterclass of the team, Ekong credited the success to the game plan formulated by the technical crew led by Coach Jose Peseiro.
“We had a game plan that we executed well, and it worked out for us. We are now preparing for the next game, knowing what we need to do to qualify, and we are ready for the challenge,” he added.
The Super Eagles will proceed to their final Group game against Guinea Bissau, who have already been eliminated from the tournament.
