Bafana to reach the AFCON quarter-finals, says Mark Williams

Bafana legend believes the South African national soccer team can reach the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Afcon tournament kicks off on Saturday but many fans are expecting Bafana to get eliminated in the early stages.

WIlliams says the team can somehow reach the quarter-finals.

Bafana reached the quarters in the 2019 and 2013 Afcon editions but have never went past the last eight since 2000.

“They can go into the quarterfinals. The Mali match is a must win. We have always been struggling against them, I believe they are next to Ivory Coast but there will be lot of pressure on them … but not for Bafana,” Williams was quoted on Sabc.

“But if they win, they get three points and if you beat Namibia then you have six points and you only need six points to qualify and we could finish first or second,” said the Bafana legend.

South Africa are in Group E alongside Tunisia, Mali and neighbours Namibia.

Williams says Bafana have not had time to prepare for the tournament.

“The more time you have, the better it is. But the coach will say yes because he has seen these players throughout the year, some of the players he brought back from the two years he has been with the national team.”
