African Nation Rewarded With €1m Bonus After Big AFCON Win

Equatorial Guinea have been rewarded with a €1 million bonus by their country's president.

Equatorial Guinea have been rewarded with a €1 million bonus by their country’s president.

The president of an African country competing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has rewarded his national team with a stunning €1 million (R20 million) bonus.

Following their 4-0 drubbing of hosts Ivory Coast in Group A on Monday night, the Equatorial Guinea team has been handed a staggering €1 million reward by the nation’s president, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.

Tuesday this week was also declared a public holiday by the president, according to Reuters, after the result saw the West African side top their group ahead of second-placed Nigeria and third-placed Ivory Coast.

The president’s son, vice-president Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, is also believed to have promised the squad a €200 000 (R4.1 million) windfall – €50 000 (R1 million) for each goal they scored against the Elephants on Monday.

The National Thunder have been led in Group A by their in-form captain Emilio Nsue, a centre-forward who sometimes plays at right-back for club side Intercity in Spain’s third tier.

The 34-year-old, who was born in Spain, opened his account at this year’s AFCON against Guinea-Bissau and ended that 4-2 victory with a hat-trick, before netting twice more against Ivory Coast.

Nsue and his teammates’ progression means they will go up against Guinea in the round of 16 on 28 January.
