Patrice Motsepe wants African footballers to be more money-wise.

The president of the Confederation of African Football discussed how players spend their money when talking about what needs to be done to develop football on the continent further.

As noted by The Citizen, Motsepe urged African footballers to manage their money wisely, saying they needed to ensure they had savings to fall back on once their careers ended.

He touched on his time as president of Mamelodi Sundowns, noting how many luxury vehicles he would see at the club’s training ground.

“When I was president of Mamelodi Sundowns, I went to see the players train and I would see very expensive, Mercedes, BMWs, even Ferraris.

“It is fine to buy these wonderful things as long as you (also) take your money and invest it for the days when you don’t play,” he said.

The CAF president added that he saw many players live the high life, but have nothing when their careers ended.

Motsepe believes players should be paid well

While discussing football in Africa, Motsepe urged clubs on the continent to pay better so that players didn’t need to leave to make money overseas, Soccer Laduma noted.

“We have to show players we can pay them very well and compete with some European countries,” he added.

He explained that exceptional talent exists on the continent, and if it is nurtured well, the players, coaches, and employees could be paid well here without having to go abroad.

Motsepe isn’t the first to want local talent to remain on the continent.

Former Roma manager Jose Mourinho also urged FIFA to block African stars from playing for other European nations so that they could represent their country of origin.

Motsepe wants another World Cup in Africa

Sports Brief previously asked Motsepe whether he believed that another African country could host the FIFA World Cup.

The CAF president was conducting a press conference about the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast when he fielded the question.

South Africa is the only country on the continent to host the World Cup, but Motsepe added that he wanted Nigeria to be the next.
