  • William Troost-Ekong has warned against underrating Angola
  • The Super Eagles will meet the Black Antelopes in the quarterfinals
  • Nigeria are seeking to win the Africa Cup of Nations for the fourth time

Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong has disclosed that the Nigerian team are eager to win their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal clash against Angola.

The three-time AFCON winners sealed a date with the Black Antelopes after cruising past arch-rivals Cameroon 2-0 in the Round of 16, with Ademola Lookman netting both goals.

Speaking in an exclusive chat with Sports Brief, Ekong warned against underrating the Angolan team but assured that the Super Eagles players will be playing to get nothing but a win.

“Who says they are a smaller team? I think this AFCON has taught everybody that the level is increasing, and there is no such thing as a small team anymore. And yes, we want to win the game.”

The Super Eagles will tackle Angola on Friday, February 2, in a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

Angola boosted with massive incentive

Meanwhile, ahead of Angola’s mouthwatering quarterfinal fixture against the Super Eagles, the Black Antelopes have been given some financial boost to propel them to victory, Soccernet reports.

One of Angola’s largest corporations, SODIAM EP, has pledged a massive US$250,000 to the national squad and technical staff if Angola defeats Nigeria and advances to the final of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations.

UNITEL, a telecommunications company, has also given each member of the Angolan delegation in Ivory Coast an iPhone 15, which includes a year of free calls, SMS, and internet service.

Nigeria must not underrate Angola

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the forthcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Angola promises to be an exciting spectacle.

Although the odds are stacked in favour of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro’s team may face a difficult battle, especially given the Black Antelopes’ undefeated streak of nine games.

The Super Eagles’ most recent triumph over Angola dates back to the 1-0 victory in the 1990 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the National Stadium in Lagos in 1989.
