Teboho Mokoena stunned 10-man Morocco with a late winner in the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16, securing Bafana Bafana’s quarter-final spot against Cape Verde.
South Africa were the underdogs heading into the match at the Stade de San Pédro in Ivory Coast due to Morocco’s fourth-placed finish at the 2022 Fifa World Cup.
Bafana Bafana showed grit and Evidence Makgopa opened the scoring in the 57th minute to give the South Africans a 1-0 lead. Morocco were give a penalty in the 82nd minute, but Achraf Hakimi failed to put them on level terms.
Morocco’s Sofyan Amrabat was given a red card in the 94th minute and then – in the fifth minute of time added on – midfielder Mokoena put the game to bed with an amazing strike.
