US Vice President Kamala Harris visits UAE to offer condolences on President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s demise

US Vice President Kamala Harris arrived in Abu Dhabi with her delegation on Monday and met the new President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to offer condolences and respects on the demise of Sheikh Khalifa bin Al Nahyan.

On behalf of the US government, Harris led a high-level delegation to the capital to pay homage to Sheikh Khalifa and congratulate Sheikh Mohammed on his election as President.

Harris was accompanied by John Kerry, special presidential envoy for climate, Philip Gordon, Miss Harris’s national security advisor, CIA Director Bill Burns, and White House Middle East co-ordinator Brett McGurk.

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed, Abu Dhabi Executive Council member and head of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office, and Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed, national security adviser, welcomed her to the capital.

As reported by Bloomberg, the gathering wasn’t just to honor a key US partner in the region but was intended to expand on behind-the-scenes efforts to deepen the bilateral relationship.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump stated he was “deeply saddened” to learn of Sheikh Khalifa’s death, who had served as president since 2004.

Taking it to Twitter, he wrote, “Jill and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan. Sheikh Khalifa was a true partner and friend of the United States, and we will honor his memory by continuing to strengthen ties with the government and people of the UAE.”

It may be mentioned that Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was unanimously elected President of the UAE by the Federal Supreme Council on Saturday, May 14.
