Uber has partnered with Enterprise Group to launch a new insurance product called ‘Safe & Save’ for Uber pro drivers.

The insurance product aims to provide Uber pro drivers in Ghana with access to affordable insurance and financial services. This innovative product includes vehicle insurance, life insurance, health insurance and funeral services, allowing drivers to enjoy the best pricing available in the market.

According to the Country Manager for Uber Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, Marjorie Saint-Lot, the introduction of this product marks a significant milestone for Uber in the ride-hailing sector as it is the first of its kind.

She said the company had to obtain specific approval from the National Insurance Commission (NIC) to bring this product to life, which demonstrates Uber’s commitment to creating a more financially inclusive economy for its drivers.

Speaking on the collaboration with Enterprise Group, she said conversations around the product began in early 2022.

“It gives me great pleasure to witness the conclusion of our memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Enterprise Group and its subsidiaries in the general insurance, life insurance, health insurance and funeral services as well as its rollout in Ghana,” Ms. Saint-Lot added.

On his part, the Chief Operating Officer-Enterprise Group, Nigel Nunoo said: “We recognised that in addition to car insurance, many drivers did not have life insurance, retirement savings or health insurance for themselves. We also acknowledged the importance of helping drivers prepare for unfortunate events such as death or the loss of a family member.

“With these considerations in mind, we created a comprehensive and attractively-priced product that includes vehicle insurance, life insurance, health insurance, funeral services and a savings component. We are proud of this product because it brings inclusivity to Uber drivers who may not have previously participated in insurance or saved for the future.”

The product is divided into three levels: bronze, silver and gold, with each offering different levels of coverage and cost. Mr. Nunoo noted that by offering a one-stop shop for all insurance needs, it becomes more accessible and affordable for drivers to sign up rather than doing it separately.

“This partnership with Uber is a significant milestone for us as it aligns with our goal of including the informal sector, such as Uber drivers, in the mainstream insurance industry. Our aim is to replicate this model for other segments of the informal sector, ensuring their inclusion in the insurance industry.

“Overall, this partnership with Uber allows us to provide an innovative and comprehensive solution for drivers’ insurance needs, reinforcing our commitment to financial inclusivity and setting a new standard in the ride-hailing industry,” Mr. Nunoo stated.
