Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan oversaw years of prosperity and development as President of the UAE, including significant gains in infrastructure, housing, and marine regulations.
Sheikh Khalifa led the UAE to obtain huge accomplishments from 2004 until his death last Friday, including nearly Dh40 billion in developments managed by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, according to state news agency Wam (via The National).

He also developed the country’s ports, which resulted in an increase in container traffic.
Following are some of the achievements of Sheikh Khalifa:
Infrastructure and housing
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure implemented projects worth more than Dh40 billion, including the construction, completion, and upgrading of over 230 public schools, the development of a world-class hospital system and 32 federal government health facilities, and the establishment of 24 fishing ports under the presidency of Sheikh Khalifa.

The ministry made significant progress in terms of highways, with the overall length of federal roads reaching more than 900 km with the completion of more than 140 projects.
Over the last 18 years, the overall length of traffic lanes on federal highways has increased to 4,300 km, connecting the country’s regions and cities.
According to Wam, more than 106 dams have been built and maintained over the past 20 years, boosting the capacity of the country’s dams and reservoirs to more than 200 million cubic metres and improving the country’s water security system.
In addition, the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme has helped more than 33,838 Emirati households achieve stability by providing housing support and building integrated residential districts.
Marine policies
During Sheikh Khalifa’s presidency, the UAE rose to the top of a number of worldwide competitiveness indexes in the marine industry.
Last year, the UAE was re-elected to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council in the B membership category for the third time last year, earning international acclaim for its pivotal role in developing strategies, policies, and agreements that improve maritime safety standards, protect the marine environment, and boost global industry efficiency.The UAE made huge strides within the marine sector locally, with a focus on catering to regional and global maritime needs in terms of providing the best infrastructure and top-class services.
The country’s competencies have aided it in establishing itself as a vital worldwide marine hub. The sector contributes Dh90 billion to the country’s GDP annually.
The UAE’s ports are among the top 10 in the world in terms of container handling volume, and the UAE is home to over 27,000 nautical companies.
The country’s national fleet capacity is 21 million deadweight tonnes, with 970 vessels in the national fleet in 2020.
