Qatar Airways has denied reports that it is among four bidders shortlisted to buy a stake in ailing carrier Malaysia Airlines.
A report by The Edge Malaysia suggested that three airlines have been shortlisted by Malaysia Airlines’ owners to make a strategic investment in the carrier.
The three shortlisted airlines are Qatar Airways, Japan Airlines and China Southern Airlines, according to the report, which cited unidentified sources.
But a spokesman at Qatar Airways said in a text message sent to Reuters that it was not among the shortlisted bidders.
A decision on the deal by Malaysia Airlines’ owners is expected soon as the cash-strapped carrier is thought to only have enough money to sustain operations until April 2020.
Reuters reported that a person with knowledge of the discussions said that a Middle Eastern or Chinese airline could eventually invest in the state carrier.
